UNILORIN STUDENT BEATS FEMALE LECTURER TO COMA, VC REACTS

A female lecturer of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Ilorin, Mrs Zakariyyah, who was beaten to coma on Thursday by a 400 level student of the institution, is now in stable condition and recuperating.

The student, simply identified as Captain Walz, reportedly attacked the lecturer in her office and assaulted her leading to severe injuries.

The Director of Corporate Affairs of the institution, Kunle Akogun, confirmed the development  in a text message to our correspondent on Saturday.

He said “a visit by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, in company of the Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Professor Oladiji, the Director, University Health Services, Dr Odunola and a few other staff to the victim and her family, this morning, Saturday, confirmed that.”

The VC described the incident as sad and unfortunate, assuring that justice will be done on the matter.

He ordered proper care of the victim on the bill of the university.

The VC reiterated his commitment to the welfare of all staff and law-abiding students of the institution.

The student, according to reports, had sought the help of the assaulted lecturer, who is his project supervisor, because he did not observe the compulsory Students Industrial Work Scheme (SIWES).

According to the report, the student, allegedly entered the lecturer’s office and started banging her table, moved closer to her and started slapping her.

The lecturer tried to escape and he kept pursuing her, she ran into an office but Captain Walz broke the window and started punching her hard.

” In an attempt to escape, the lecturer fell down, sustained a head cut and was strangled by the student till she fell into coma,” our correspondent further gathered.

Captain Walz was arrested by the security personnel of the university and handed over to the Police.

JAMB Collaborates With EFCC On Examination Malpractices,

As part of efforts to curb all cybercrimes and other examination infractions, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is to synergise with the Economic andFinancial Crime Commission (EFCC) to tackle the menace. The synergy became necessary in view of the avowed commitment of JAMB to curb all acts that could undermine public examinations in the country as well as restore sanity in the entire educational system.

According to the invitation, the Registrar dropped this hint when he received the Chairman of the EFCC, AbdulRasheed Bawa, in his office on 8th November 2021.

The EFCC had come to the Board’s National Headquarter to seek collaboration in terms of further safeguarding the critical operational processes of the world-class assessment body.

Prof.Oloyede said EFCC has been at the forefront of the fight against cybercrimes and financial crimes adding that they have demonstrated sufficient capacity to tackle the problem headlong.

He pointed out that the Board hadimmense confidence in the anti-graft agency as a veritable partner in the fightagainst fraudulent characters who are hell-bent on compromising its system. He said, “ If we partner an agency like the EFCC, we would attain high capacity in the fight against cybercrime, examination malpractices and other infractions.”

He reaffirmed the commitment of JAMB to always partner with credible agencies.

In this wise, he disclosed that the Board is selective in the type of partners, associates with especially in the area of the conduct of third-party examinationsto safeguard its hard-earned integrity. He said the confidence being reposed in the Board is not unconnected with the surge in the various proposals from different clients including corporate organisations and multinational companies, to conduct either

recruitment of personnel, staff promotion examinations, scholarship awards as well as professional assessment, among others. He said the Board only charges very minimal administrative cost to defray some inevitable expenses as the Board is not out to make profit from the exercise. He added that such engagements afford the Board the opportunity to test-run its facilities for peak performance.

Earlier, the EFCC Chairman, who was represented on the occasion by his Chief of Staff, Ms Hadiza Zubairu, expressed the determination of the Commission to fight sleaze and other financial- related maladies stating that in the spirit of inter-governmental collaboration, the Commission was ready to partner with the Board.

In addition, she stated that based on a series of investigation by the commission, most of the perpetrators of cybercrimes are graduates of tertiary institutions within the ages of 15 to 32

stating. Ms Zubairu, however, disclosed that the

Commission had built capacity overtime to contain this malaise and would offer necessary assistance to the Board in that regard.
